Astra, Goddess of Ice, felt her cerulean blue eyes brim with tears as she watched Ares, God of War, mourn the death of his favorite warrior. A single searing tear rolled down his cheek as he leaned over her. He picked her body up and transported it to his palace on Mount Olympus. Astra followed still invisible to Ares even though he could have sensed her, but did not for he was filled with overwhelming grief. She watched as he made a transparent glass coffin materialize. He gently laid her in it for he had loved her, but she had not known for she thought the God of War without a heart. He placed her sword across her chest and sealed the lid. He stood there gazing at her for a few moments then disappeared into the aether to mourn for her. Astra tried to blink away the tears that threatened to fall, but found that she could not. She was one of the few who had discovered that the God of War did indeed have a heart.
Astra watched in horror as Ares slowly became entirely cold and unfeeling. Others knew that his beloved warrior had died, but none other than Astra and Ares himself knew what happened in his palace that day. His heart was so torn with grief that he started slaughtering many mortals for that was the only thing that gave him the smallest feeling of joy. He soon became so bloodthirsty that the Pantheon of Olympian Gods held a meeting to discuss how to stop him. They decided that the only way was the kill him for nobody could dissuade him to stop massacring the mortals. Artemis pulled a vile of hind's blood from her neck and stained a jewel encrusted dagger with the dark red blood. She held out the dagger offering it to anyone to take. Everyone averted their eyes either because they could not stand the thought of being the one to kill family, or they wanted to but were afraid they would get killed by Ares with the very dagger that was meant to kill him. Suddenly Eris, Goddess of Discord, appeared and snatched the dagger from Artemis' outstretched hand. She quickly disappeared smiling in evil forebodence after she informed them that she would take care of it.
Eris thought that with Ares gone there would be an opening for the position. She had noticed that when she appeared to Ares he no longer acknowledged her, so she decided to use this to her advantage. She appeared invisible to in Ares' palace. She took the blood-covered dagger out of its sheath and flung it right at his heart. Unfortunately for her Ares had noticed her presence this time and caught the dagger a few inches before it would have pierced his heart. Eris immediately disappeared fearing for her life for Ares now possessed the hinds blood dagger that could kill gods.
Astra had been watching all this through a portal in her palace in her icy, Antarctic domain. She saw that Ares' face had contorted in anger, and he had gone off to kill the last remaining mortals. Astra knew what she had to do. She held her hands up and used a tremendous amount of her powers covering vast regions of land in thick sheets of ice. She had done this to preserve what was left of it before Ares destroyed it too. By the time the ice melted Ares would hopefully have gotten over his temporary insanity. The Gods and Mount Olympus had not been frozen along with the rest of the earth.
About 100,000 years later the ice had all melted. The population of mortals had greatly decreased, but it was slowly building back up. There were some mortals who had lived during the "Ice Age" as they called it, but they were very hard times to survive in. Ares would have continued his carnage except for miraculous event. Ares never did go back to the room where he had left his warrior for he could not bear the sight of her body decayed and her beauty faded, so he never knew what happened to it. When Astra froze the earth she had unintentionally turned the coffin into ice thus preserving her body also. By some unearthly force when the earth warmed again the coffin melted, and the chest of the woman inside began to rise and fall in breath. And her name was Xena...
